One of my resolutions for the new year is to make more regular postings on this site’s Journal page. I got waylaid by the holidays but now I’m back!<\/p>\n

21) Humble Pie \u2013 Performance \u2013 Rockin\u2019 the Fillmore<\/em><\/strong> (1971\/2013; see image above)
\nSteve Marriott<\/strong> plays and sings hard rocking full-throated British versions of blues and R&B classics on this electrifying live set.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The original double-LP was expanded in 2013 with a 4-CD box set (Performance \u2013 Rockin\u2019 the Fillmore \u2013 The Complete Recordings<\/em><\/strong>) that includes all four of their May 1971 shows at the Fillmore East (the more Marriott, the merrier, I always say). This is Steve at his vocal peak. Best blues tracks: \u201cFour Day Creep\u201d, \u201cI\u2019m Ready\u201d, \u201cRolling Stone\/My Babe\u201d and \u201cI Don\u2019t Need No Doctor\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

22) Jellybread \u2013 The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions<\/em> <\/strong>(1969\/2008)
\nPete Wingfield <\/strong>really stars here on Alan Price-ish vocals and piano. For some great, smooth British blues, try \u201cRiver\u2019s Invitation\u201d, \u201cI Pity the Fool\u201d, \u201cNever Say No\u201d, \u201cI\u2019ve Got to Forget You\u201d, \u201cBoogie Sandwich\u201d and the song I first heard by them, \u201cRockin\u2019 Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

24) Tom Jones \u2013 Praise & Blame<\/em> <\/strong>(2010)
\nTom Jones<\/strong> surprised everyone with this magnificent blues and gospel CD. Every cut is killer, especially \u201cWhat Good Am I?\u201d, \u201cLord Help\u201d, \u201cStrange Things\u201d, \u201cBurning Hell\u201d, \u201cDon\u2019t Knock\u201d, \u201cNobody\u2019s Fault But Mine\u201d and \u201cRun On\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This highly acclaimed CD was followed by Spirit in the Room<\/em><\/strong> (2012) which found Tom once again in his element, singing great blues, gospel and other roots music. How many other vocalists can sing like this? None! Get up and enjoy \u201cSoul of a Man\u201d, \u201cBad As Me\u201d \u201cLove and Blessings\u201d, \u201cTraveling Shoes\u201d and \u201cAll Blues Hail Mary\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Prior to these two great CDs was Reloaded <\/em><\/strong>(2002) which contains a hot version of Leadbelly<\/strong>‘s “Black Betty” produced by Wyclef Jean<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

After that came the terrific Tom Jones & Jools Holland<\/em><\/strong> (2004), Tom\u2019s first major return to his blues and early rock roots. \u201cSt. James\u2019 Infirmary Blues\u201d is amazing; other superb tracks include \u201cLife\u2019s Too Short to Be with You\u201d, \u201c200 Lbs. of Heavenly Joy\u201d, \u201cIt\u2019ll Be Me\u201d, \u201cRoberta\u201d, \u201cMess of Blues\u201d and \u201cMy Babe\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

For you completists out there, the CD single of \u201cIt\u2019ll Be Me\u201d has Tom singing the non-LP cut of Percy Mayfield<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cPlease Send Me Someone to Love\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

25) Jo Ann Kelly \u2013 Black Rat Swing<\/em><\/strong> (2003)
\nThis comprehensive 2-CD 45 track set covers this great singer\u2019s entire 1964-1988 career. Her ethereal voice calls up the ghost of Memphis Minnie<\/strong>, even sounding of that lost time. Her early death was a tragic loss. Listen to \u201cBackwater Blues\u201d, \u201cLevee Camp Holler\u201d, \u201cLouisiana Blues\u201d, \u201cI\u2019ve Been Scorned\u201d, \u201cJump Steady Daddy\u201d, \u201cHelp Me Through the Night\u201d, \u201cTwo Nineteen Blues\u201d, \u201cCome See About Me\u201d, \u201cMoon Going Down\u201d and \u201cDeath Have Mercy\u201d. Jo Ann’s singing gives me the eerie chills.<\/p>\n
