A few days ago, my son Andy gifted me with what I think will be considered the graphic novel of the year: Craig Thompson‘s Ginseng Roots.
There are two versions. One is a hardbound book. Andy got me the deluxe edition which is twelve comics in a beautiful box with all kinds of other special extras enclosed in the box.
Thompson is the author-illustrator of another great graphic novel: Blankets. If you liked Blankets, you’ll love Ginseng Roots. Both are autobiographical. I believe that Craig has been working on Ginseng Roots for seven years –– and it shows. The amount of work that went into the writing and art for this book is staggering.
You will come away smarter after reading this entertaining volume. I don’t want to tell you what this book is all about because I want it to be the same surprise for you as it was for me. Trust me on this. Run down to your local comics or book shop and get a copy right away. You won’t be sorry.
Congratulations, Craig, on another masterpiece.
