Christmas Gift From Me to You

Here’s a little Christmas gift from me to you. Please share this story written and recorded 40 years ago by John Henry Faulk with your family and friends. It truly captures the spirit of Christmas.

It’s an annual Christmas tradition to play this tale on KPCC, our local public radio station. I heard it for the first time yesterday on my car radio while I was running my final Christmas errands. I arrived at the post office before it had finished. I just sat there in my car in the post office parking lot, listening to its conclusion.

I felt as if this story was about me and my relatives. I grew up very poor and there were farm folk on both sides of my family and a certain Grapes of Wrath Steinbeck quality (although my dad prided himself in the fact that, poor as he was, at least he wasn’t an Okie. I guess there’s always someone else to look down on; I did not share his prejudices) to many of the kids and folks with whom I grew up here in southern California’s 1950s.

The tender, vibrant and caring spirit expressed in this story had its affect; it took me awhile to wipe my eyes and compose myself before heading into the post office.

Merry Christmas, Everyone!
