Chesley Awards

On Sunday morning, just minutes prior to my competing in the Iron
Artist competition at Dragon*Con in Atlanta, I got word from the World
Science Fiction Convention in Japan that production designer Eugenio
Caballero and myself had won the Chesley Award for Best Product
Illustration from the Association of Science Fiction & Fantasy Artists
for our design work on Pan’s Labyrinth. Woo-hoo! My first Chesley!

Thanks to all who nominated us (special thanks to Ingrid) and to all
who voted for us. Director Guillermo del Toro, however, deserves the
bulk of the credit for this award. It was his precise and distinctive
vision that guided us down that wonderful visual path. Thanks, Memo!

PS: I won the Iron Artist competition as well, so I’ll be back at
Dragon*Con next year. Great Iron Artist hosting this year by the
inimitable Michael Winslow.

PPS: Just two or three weeks and my twelve San Diego Natural History
Museum murals will be completed. I’ll keep you posted!

  1. Congratulations! I’m also looking forward to seeing those murals. The hope is to make it out to San Diego next summer.
How are you feeling these days? Are you completely over the surgery at this point or do you still have the occasional "day" when things are off? I hope that’s a negative on the off days.
I missed the chance to get the Burian sketchbook. The regular sketchbbok and new ‘church’ sketchbook are in hand so I’ll try to catch up with the other as soon as things get a little more settled. Moving back from the big place in Germany has left me with more stuff than room to stash it all. I’m afraid I’ll be a bad consumer for a little while longer.
    Take care.

  2. Dear Mr. Stout,
Any chance that you could post your winning Iron Artist art here? I am sure others besides me would like a look at that.
The updated website looks great. How about a few more originals for sale or ebay auctions? Best Wishes,

  3. I will send Bill a photo of both of the Iron artist paintings sometime next week after I download them to my computer and he can put them up if he wants. Unfortunately, I missed the bidding for Bill’s piece because they started it earlier than announced, but I did buy the runner up by Tara Mcpherson which was pretty cool too. Congrats on the Chesley Bill and I look forward to seeing all the murals up next year when I am in San Diego.

  4. Congrats on the Chesley Award!

One of the funniest things I ever witnessed was Harlan Ellison and Peter David hosting an Iron Artist event with Larry Elmore and Don Bluth. I’d kill to have that on video. Harlan and Peter were on their A-game that day.
