Chesley Awards

music: The score to Pan's Labyrinth
mood: Jubilant

On Sunday morning, just minutes prior to my competing in the Iron
Artist competition at Dragon*Con in Atlanta, I got word from the World
Science Fiction Convention in Japan that production designer Eugenio
Caballero and myself had won the Chesley Award for Best Product
Illustration from the Association of Science Fiction & Fantasy Artists
for our design work on Pan's Labyrinth. Woo-hoo! My first Chesley!

Thanks to all who nominated us (special thanks to Ingrid) and to all
who voted for us. Director Guillermo del Toro, however, deserves the
bulk of the credit for this award. It was his precise and distinctive
vision that guided us down that wonderful visual path. Thanks, Memo!

PS: I won the Iron Artist competition as well, so I'll be back at
Dragon*Con next year. Great Iron Artist hosting this year by the
inimitable Michael Winslow.

PPS: Just two or three weeks and my twelve San Diego Natural History
Museum murals will be completed. I'll keep you posted!
