Its coming along quite well. The jaguar looks great, and you really nailed the pose of the rattlesnake. I feel like if I look at it long enough, it will strike! Oh, and your roaring saber-tooth cat is fierce. I feel sorry for the creatures that fell victim to its hunger.

I'd often wondered how effective a saber-tooth's bite could be with its extremely long canines. It seemed like the teeth would be in the way of getting a good bite. But, then I learned that the saber-tooth's jaw could open 120 degrees for a really deep bite! Teeth like knives and hundreds of pounds of muscle....what a combination!

I'll check in from time to time to see how its progressing. Its very impressive!

Bill,

You are one of a kind. :)

I enjoy all these little side stories as they paint a more complete picture of the man behind the easel.

Bill,

Thank you for posting all of this Moebius information. I am very fond of his work. He contained a spiritual understanding rarely seen in an individual.

Dear Bill,

It has been a couple of years since I last saw you at the MONSTERPALOZZA and it was a joy to see you at your table promoting all of your varied artwork. Actually it was great just to be greeted by your consistently happy persona. I have been in dreamland with your HALLUCINATIONS book, which for my tastes is the perfect antidote to reality. It gave this fan an opportunity to reveal in your technicolor fantasy worlds; like nobody else on the planet can create.

Look forward to seeing you next time... It is THE SHOW for horror/fantasy film fanatics.

Hi Rick,
Thanks! My pleasure.

Hi Aaron,
Sometimes prehistoric mammal skin and hair are found preserved. I own some mammoth fur I purchased from some Siberians at the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show. They were selling mammoth skin, too (along with an entire skeleton + tusks). I saw giant ground sloth (Milodon) hair when I was down in Patagonia.

Yes, it's true. Often, baby animals will exhibit the markings or other artifacts of their ancestors. Baby hoatzins even have wing claws for awhile.

That's why I use baby monitor lizards for the striping, patterns and coloring of their ancestors, the mosasaurs.

I painted a prehistoric San Diego rhino in my Oligocene mural for the San Diego Natural History Museum.

Dear Mr. Stout,

It's great to watch all this come together. I was wondering about the curved beak on the flamingo. Glad you cleared that up. Is it really true that the coloring of modern young mammals replicates the colors of their ancient ancestors? First time I'd heard that. I thought we were largely ignorant of the coloring on early mammals, although I know they found some preserved mammoths with hairy hides intact.

Excuse my ignorance, but were there any prehistoric rhinos or titanotheres in prehistoric San Diego? Just wondered. They are some of my favorite animals.
(I hope to see some modern rhinos in the wild some day too).

Thanks again for the look at this.

Best Wishes,
Aaron

Bill,

Looking wonderful! Love the CU on the tapir so we can see all that detailing and fur indications. Love the texture (and color) work on the mammoth as well.

So great to have the opportunity to watch this all come together, including insights and pics of changes and repositions, etc.

Thanks,
Rick
